The first "Pony Penning" event took place on Chincoteague Island, Virginia, in 1924. This annual tradition involves the wild ponies of Assateague Island swimming to the shore for health checks, followed by a foal auction that raises funds for their care.
Surfer’s Riptide, a cherished stallion, was a "buyback" foal—purchased at auction and immediately returned to the Assateague herd, where he continues to thrive.
A portion of the proceeds from this model will support the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company and the Museum of Chincoteague, both of which work tirelessly to ensure the health and preservation of the island’s iconic ponies.
