Sleek and sophisticated, the Hackney Pony was once the pinnacle of driving fashion. Bred as light carriage ponies with a natural high-stepping trot, they combined flashy looks with the ability to cover distances quickly thanks to their brisk gait and stamina.
Today, Hackney Ponies retain the elegance of their forebearers and are esteemed as high-quality driving ponies for both competition and pleasure. Their graceful movements and athletic appearance have earned them the nickname, “ballerina of the show ring.” While Hackney Ponies make up most of the Hackney population in the United States, they are considered a rare breed in the UK, listed as “critical” by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.
Displaying a richly shaded chestnut coat, alert expression, and compact body, Norwich exemplifies the breed’s qualities. Norwich’s name honors the city in England where the UK’s Hackney Horse Society was founded in 1883.
